First You Must Identify What Are You Chasing Or What's Chasing You
I was working with my mustang Marshal when he suddenly became concerned over the rope dragged on the ground… he started to run, thankfully we were in the round pen and he was easy to shut down. This is a common thing I have to support Marshal with and even with many sessions where he seems to have let go of this concern, it still pops up from time to time.
This got me thinking of how many times we do the same thing in our lives and in our businesses if your an entrepreneur. We get so stressed out, overwhelmed, and stuck in cycles of chaos that we can't seem to break free of.
In reality much like Marshal, it's all in our heads… what we think is chasing us isn't. We just need to quit running.
If you start to feel panicked, short tempered, frustrated, or burnt out I encourage you to stop and BE STILL for a moment. Take some time to reflect and identify what's “chasing” you? Is it that you have over-committed your time, that you're trying to take on too much at once, are you taking responsibility for other peoples problems, worrying about things you have no control over?
Take a moment to get clear on what the source is, stop running from it and take your power back. It's likely that you just need to break down the situation, the tasks, or whatever has you feeling stressed. Just like Marshal, you won't get clear or calm while your running away. And just like the rope was attached to Marshal, it's likely what you're running from is attached to you (at least for the moment), and running away won't do you any good.
What are you chasing?
I mentioned identifying what you're chasing OR what's chasing you… I don't have a horse analogy to go along with this one. But I imagine if you give yourself a second to think about it, it's likely that you are chasing or pursuing something in your life right now. It could be in your career, your business, in your horsemanship, your health, your finances, or your relationships. Some area of your life where you have a goal or vision you want to achieve.
Here's the thing you want to be cautious of especially if you're driven like me… Let me ask you a quick question. What happens when you chase something?
IT RUNS AWAY!!
Now that doesn't mean I don't believe we should have goals, dreams, and ambitions to move towards. If you know me at all… that couldn't be further from my viewpoint. But after many years of chasing my dream, I realized that under the surface, I was pursuing out of an internal fear. This chase was literally repelling what I wanting, no matter how hard I tried and ran after it.
So again… take a moment and reflect. Ask yourself, what are you chasing?
5 Steps To Eliminate The Viscous Cycles of Chaos
The secret to banishing overwhelm in your life is to be STILL!
- Stop doing whatever feels like chaos, heaviness, or pure stress.
- Take inventory – what is chasing you or what are you chasing?
- Identify who you are, the strengths you possess, and take action on what you can do.
- Look for the lesson. There is something you need to learn in this moment, search it out. Otherwise you might find yourself here again.
- Leverage what you have right now. As humans we tend to see what we think we need, in order to get what we want. It's the trap of have-do-be. The order in which success comes is be-do-have. You must be the person, who would do the things, and achieve what you wish to have.
It's funny I used to think that acronyms were cheesy… and I have caught myself making them up a lot lately. But the next time you feel anxiety, worry, doubt, or any of those negative emotions creeping up on you.
Or even if they jump out at you like a plastic bag in wind, don't be like Marshal was that day… take a deep breath and choose to be STILL. Work your way through these five steps and enjoy peaceful sailing to whatever it is you wish to achieve. It's possible to have internal peace in the midst of external storms, I hope these tips help get you to that place.
